Is nubuck water-resistant?
Nabuk is a high-quality material made from bovine leather, commonly used in footwear, leather goods, and upholstery. The correct term is nubuck, derived from new buck, referring to newly processed animal hide. It is worked from the outer side (grain), giving it a soft and velvety texture. It is more durable, resistant, and expensive than suede but requires special care.
Characteristics and precautions:
- Sensitive to water, oily substances, and direct light, which can cause stains or fading.
- Can easily stain from fabrics that bleed color or from ink.
Cleaning nabuk:
- Use soft-bristled brushes and specific cleaners.
- Gently brush in circular motions after each use.
- For stains, apply dedicated products and let them sit for at least half an hour before removing with a cloth or nubuck eraser.
- For ink stains, use a specific ink solvent promptly.
Waterproofing:
- It is advisable to treat nabuk with specific waterproof sprays, following the instructions on the packaging.
- The protection is not permanent, so periodic reapplication is necessary.
Proper drying:
- Avoid exposure to direct heat sources or sunlight.
- Use a medium-temperature hairdryer or place newspaper inside shoes to absorb moisture.
- While drying, brush gently to maintain the fabric's softness.
